Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Fell pony is one of the UK’s rare native Draft pony breeds. They originate from the Cumbrian fells (where they get their name) and are adapted to live, work, and thrive in all the extreme weather the region is known for. They are an extremely versatile breed and well-suited to all kinds of riders, drivers, and work.

  • Temperament: Generally calm and friendly, making them great family ponies. However, they can be opinionated and are not just for children, often serving as excellent mounts for adults due to their weight-carrying capacity.
  • Size/Build: They are considered a draft-type pony, with a sturdy build that allows them to carry adults easily.
  • Diet/Hardiness: Known as "easy keepers," they thrive on forage and require less grain than many breeds, often living outdoors in all weather.
  • Health: Generally healthy, though they can be susceptible to Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome (FIS), which can be managed via testing. They are prone to obesity, requiring careful feeding management.
  • Lifespan: They typically live 25–30 years.
  • Color & Markings: Primarily black (approx. 85%), but also brown, bay, or gray. A small star or white on the hind fetlocks is allowed, but large white patches  (piebald/skewbald) are not permissible. (These and reds from pure stock are usually registered in section X.)
